Capability 01 · Product Direction

Decide what to build before deciding how.

Product Direction turns an idea, a frustration or a board-level objective into a shared understanding of the problem, the people affected and the smallest valuable system worth building first.

Business purpose

Reduce the cost of wrong turns. A few weeks of structured discovery is far cheaper than months of engineering against an assumption nobody tested.

Operational problems addressed

Signs this capability is needed.

  1. P1Stakeholders describe the same initiative in different, sometimes conflicting terms
  2. P2A long feature wish-list exists, but nobody has agreed what matters first
  3. P3Estimates vary widely because the scope has never been written down
  4. P4The team is unsure whether to buy, extend an existing platform or build something new
  5. P5Technical constraints surface late and force expensive redesign

What this includes

Inside Product Direction.

01Stakeholder and user research
Structured interviews and working sessions with the people who will fund, use and support the system.
02Process and journey mapping
A walk through how work actually happens today, including the workarounds nobody documents.
03Build, buy or extend assessment
An honest comparison of off-the-shelf tools, platform extension and custom engineering for your context.
04Prioritization and release shaping
Grouping requirements into releases that each deliver usable value instead of one large launch.
05Technical feasibility review
Early checks on integrations, data availability and infrastructure limits that could change the plan.

Deliverables

  • Problem statement and success criteria
  • Current-state process maps
  • Prioritized requirements backlog
  • Release plan with decision points
  • Architecture outline and risk register
  • Commercial estimate for the first release

Engagement and delivery

How this work is usually structured.

Engagement options

Delivery approach

  1. 01 · Understand

Most of the effort sits here: interviews, process walk-throughs and a review of existing systems and data.

  2. 02 · Define

Findings become a ranked backlog, explicit assumptions and measurable outcomes for release one.

  3. 03 · Design

A thin architecture outline and key screens confirm that the plan is buildable before it is funded.

Replacing spreadsheet-based operations

Internal platform

Starting situation

A growing operations team manages requests through a shared spreadsheet, an inbox and a messaging group. Each team keeps its own copy of the tracker.

Operational friction

  • Requests are lost between the inbox and the tracker
  • Approvals happen in chat with no record
  • Several versions of the same spreadsheet disagree
  • Weekly reporting is assembled by hand

Proposed system

A web-based operations platform with a single request intake, configurable approval chains, a shared record for every item and live reporting.

Architecture outline

Experiences

Request intake form · Team work queues · Manager approval view

Operations

Workflow and approval engine · Shared record store · Notifications

Intelligence

Operational dashboards · Ageing and bottleneck alerts

Foundations

Managed cloud hosting · Email and calendar integration · Spreadsheet import for migration

Assurance

Role-based access · Audit history · Automated backups

Technologies that may be used

Next.jsNode.js or .NET APIPostgreSQLMicrosoft 365 or Google Workspace integrationMetabase or Power BI

Expected categories of improvement

  • Fewer lost or duplicated requests
  • Traceable approvals
  • One current record
  • Reporting without manual assembly

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Product Direction.

Not always. We start by reviewing what exists. Often the work becomes a shorter validation exercise that tests the document against real users, data and constraints rather than starting again.

Written, reusable outputs: process maps, a prioritized backlog, an architecture outline, a release plan and an estimate. They belong to you and are usable with or without Omnexa for the build.

A decision-maker who can settle priorities, one or two people who do the work being changed, and someone who understands the current systems. Their time is concentrated in a small number of sessions.
